The Origins of Black History Month

February is Black History Month.  I thought it would be appropriate to incorporate a post or two a week on the topic.  A sensible place to start seemed to be with a discussion of how Black History Month came to be.

Black History Month was begun as Negro History Week by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926. His goal was to educate the American people about African-American history, focusing on African Americans' cultural backgrounds and reputable achievements.
